the White one or the Yellow one? Bricklane Beigels (Bagels)

About Brick Lane-

Located in East London, Brick Lane is often referred to as "Banglatown" and is famous for its food market, Bangladeshi and Indian restaurants (along with various international cuisines), vintage shops, and vibrant street art. But long before these elements became synonymous with Brick Lane, the area was a hub for a large Jewish community that arrived in Spitalfields in the late 19th century. While the community gradually dispersed to North London, the bagel shops remained, and the spelling of "beigel" for bagel is a remnant of that era. There is also a nearby Jewish synagogue (shul) in the vicinity.

In search of delicious bagels... "The white one or the yellow one?" This is a conversation often heard among Londoners walking along Brick Lane. The yellow shop, Beigel Shop, is the older establishment founded in 1855. However, it's the white shop, Beigel Bake, that consistently has long queues. It was established in 1976. These neighboring shops are both open 24 hours a day, and their menus and prices are nearly identical. Both places offer delicious bagels!

Beigel Shop(the Yellow one)

📍155 Brick Lane, London E1 6SB

Beigel Shop

Salt Beef Bagel: Topped with pickles and mustard. It's filled with hefty servings of salted beef, making it quite substantial and satisfying. The bagel itself from this shop has a firmer texture, and the slight firmness pairs well with the beef. 🥯🥩

Beigel Bake (the White one)

📍159 Brick Lane, London E1 6SB

Beigel Bake

Smoked Salmon and Cream Cheese: On a sesame seed bagel. I apologize for the limited visibility of the filling! It's a classic item in bagel recipes. The bagel's dough here is soft and chewy, which might suit your preference. The white one is usually busier, but even with around 30 people in line, it moves quickly, taking less than 10 minutes to get your bagel. This shop reportedly sells about 3,000 bagels a day through its store and other wholesale channels.

Famous personalities are frequently spotted here, from renowned football players to pop superstar Madonna. When Mariah Carey visited, she reportedly ordered the Smoked Salmon & Cream Cheese bagel, while her companion opted for the Salt Beef bagel.

conclusion?

Personal preferences vary. Personally, I probably like the white one more... because a busy shop often implies quick turnover and freshness. By the way, the yellow shop was the first in the world to introduce brightly colored rainbow bagels. That's something you might want to try next time.

While these two shops are considered friendly rivals, they were originally owned by the same family. Brothers Asher and Sammy Cohen started off working for another brother at The Beigel Shop next door, but eventually branched out to 159 Brick Lane in 1976.

When you visit Brick Lane, be sure to try both shops !
